Annual Juniors vs. Seniors Match - 16th June 2014

This was the 5th Juniors vs. Seniors match and a thrilling finish saw the Juniors retain the trophy after an 8-8 draw.

At 16 boards a side this was the biggest match of the series so far and featured the latest Hedger, Timmy, just 6 years old. It was great to see Ken Haworth back at the club as he recovers from illness.

With the Junior age limit raised from 18 to 21, Matt Payne and William Graham were back from University to head up the juniors. Matt had a fine win against Keith but William was on the wrong end of a Colin Parker special.

Cassie started well against Peter but after sorting out a few problems in the opening, Peter used his experience to outplay Cassie and win a well constructed ending. Arthur grabbed a pawn against Don and gradually turned the screw before winning with a nice tactic.

Dominic and Nick shared the points in a fine scrap whilst Ben Simpson was able to beat off Dave Wallis’s early attack and win a nice game.

George played well to win against Keith but so did Chris Boyes who may have upset the Treasurer by beating his grandson, Michael, with a great attacking game.

Alec had a real up and downer versus Dave Bennett before winning what looked like a drawn ending in Dave’s time trouble. Also in time trouble, Dave Bradley was unable to round off a fine game and succumbed on time to Thomas. Dave Pople produced a fine mating attack to beat Phil.

Max was on the verge of winning but Lucas fought hard and tricked Max into a stalemate. Meanwhile Paul was playing his nephew, Dean, who played really well to draw. Ben Gregory was unable to hold off Mark despite a great opening and stubborn resistance.

With 2 games left, the Juniors led 7.5 to 6.5 and only 2 wins would see the Seniors regain the trophy. It looked like Phil Crompton would win but a blunder in time trouble gave Alex the advantage. Alex then returned the favour but Phil could not convert his advantage before his flag fell – the game resulted in a draw as Alex had only his King left. So, despite Ken beating Timmy in the longest game of the day, the Juniors retained the trophy.
