Bernard Bruno Memorial Rapidplay - 25th June 2012

24 players turned up for the 4th Bernard Bruno memorial tournament – a fantastic turnout and a sign of just how well the club is growing.  6 rounds of 20 minute games, handicapped on time, was the formula.  The maximum difference of 18 minutes versus 2 was seen on several occasions and it made for some enjoyable chess with many games going into the last couple of minutes.

Special mention for good humour goes to Dave Wallis – a series of unfortunate pairings left him with 2 minutes for every single game but he was still smiling at the end!  It was great to Arthur Menday in action too – after a rusty start he won his last 3 games to reach a very respectable 50%.

Last year’s champion, Chris Jones, was in good form early on and so was the club champion, Dave Graham.  However, it was to be a changing of the guard with the older guys having to give way to the young upstarts in the shape of Alex and Matt.  Chris held on for 3rd place ahead of Dave who was held to a draw by 7 year-old Alec in the last round.

The prizes were keenly contested and helped by a win over Matt, Arthur Graham picked-up the Top Junior prize.  Dave Pople played a terrific last round game to beat Kazeem and pip him for the highest first round loser prize.  Mark and Alec shared the under-100 prize having played well throughout.

The tournament was played in a great spirit and a big thanks also to all who played.

Look forward to seeing you all next season.
