On Saturday 11th July, Worthing Chess Club held a handicap tournament in memory of Bernard Bruno, a long-standing club member who sadly passed away during the season.

There was an excellent turnout; 19 players in all including 8 juniors, the youngest only aged 8!

Special mention goes to Kevin Walsh with 3 out of 5 who tied for the U-100 prize.

So 3 juniors took the prizes and hot on their heels were 2 others, William Graham and Robin Fells. It was also great to see 3 new potential junior members come along – Morgan Blake, Kieran Quinlan and Cassie Graham – and they also competed well.

It was left to Dave Wallis and Chris Jones to fly the flag for the older generation and they both scored an excellent 4 out of 5.

The whole tournament was played in a great spirit with the handicap system providing some amusing moments:

Club champion David Oates resigned after only playing 1 move against Matt Payne (see below) before scurrying off to the bar to drown his sorrows !

White: Matt Payne Black: David Oates

Handicap: Black starts without his f-pawn.

1. e2-e4 e7-e5 ??
2. Qd1-h5+ Resigns !

After Ke7 or g6, Qh5xe5 is devastating.

Many thanks go to Paula Payne, Chris Jones and Carol Graham who provided refreshments. Thanks also to Peter Pelling who generously helped towards the cost of the event which, along with the entry fees, re-couped the costs of the event and will see some cash go into club funds.
